It occurred in a relatively shallow depth of just over a quarter mile and about five miles northeast of Randolph at 5:59 p.m., according to readings at the seismic network operated by the University of Utah.
U. seismologist Relu Burlacu said the earthquake is small, especially compared to recent quakes that have cost hundreds of lives, including a 6.9 magnitude quake in China on April 13.
The 4.9-magnitude earthquake at 5.59 p.m. local time was centered about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east-northeast of Randolph, a small city in Rich County, Utah. It struck about 0.3 mile (0.5 kilometer) deep, making it a shallowearthquake.
Calls came into the Eyewitness News newsroom from areas of Preston and the Bear Lake Valley. The quake even registered on recorders as far away as the Teton Pass, Wyoming.
University of Utah officials say the quake hit just before 6 p.m. MDT Thursday. The epicenter was about five miles east-northeast of Randolph in Rich County.
Randolph is about 73 miles northeast of Salt Lake City. People in the state capital have reported feeling the temblor, along with some reports of shaking in Idaho and Wyoming. Local News 8 has received calls from people as far away from the quake as Pocatello and Blackfoot.
A 4.9 is a “light” earthquake, according to Kristine Pankow, associate director of the University of Utah Seismograph Stations. It wouldn’t be enough to knock people over, but people would feel it, she said. However, it was the largest quake since 1992, she said. On average, Utah gets anearthquake of greater than a 5 magnitude every 10 years, but this one waited 18.
